Be Open to Everything

At the core … where do you find inspiration?

"Be open to everything. Never close your mind because you never know where your next idea may come from. I've had too many ideas that have just come out of nowhere," said author and illustrator Edward Gorey in a fascinating book, "The World of Edward Gorey" by Clifford Ross and Karen Wilkin (1996).

Mr. Gorey read. He read and he read and he read. He collected things. He drew pictures. He wrote and jotted and wrote some more. He was prolific and accomplished and interesting and interested. He said things like, "Well, I do adore finials."

When asked about his working day, Mr. Gorey responded resplendently. "I usually wake up and think, Oh, I really must do something today. But then quite often many things come up before I can start doing them. I try and do something each day. Work might not be exactly the word for it."

In a world replete with headlines and deadlines, posts and tweets, I share these words as a reminder to myself that there is inspiration and humor and beauty for us to find ... if we are open to it.
